Audit Programmes

Where to now?

With WSMP gone, many are now asking “what’s next”?

Certainly, there is a bit of crystal ball gazing as to what will dominate in the health and safety auditing market. Regardless, there are a lot of options for boards and businesses when considering an audit tool to help assess and develop their health and safety system. For example:

Some businesses may elect to continue with ACC’s system and have 2 or 3 yearly audits against the old WSMP standard to help with gap assessment and due diligence requirements. Some may prefer to use the safety management part of the Accredited Employers Programme to assess themselves.

AS/NZS 4801 is still an option, however a likely contender is the yet to arrive ISO 45001 standard (the health and safety version of ISO 9001 and 14001) which may be available in early 2018.

Safety star rating, although not an audit tool, and not yet in place, is a performance assessment diagnostic for medium to large businesses to identify areas for improvement.

Businesses need to be mindful of choosing an audit standard that has a strong reputation, and has had a robust assessment along with public consultation to ensure it’s covering the right health and safety components.
